Today in Classic Rock History

Tom Jones recorded "It's Not Unusual" for Decca Records at age 24. The song, originally offered to Sandie Shaw, became Jones' breakthrough hit, reaching #1 in the UK and #10 in the US. Watch Tom's classic performance

The Beatles completed their final recording session for the Rubber Soul album at Abbey Road Studios in London. In a marathon 13-hour session that began at 6 PM and ended at 7 AM the next morning, the band recorded "You Won't See Me," "Girl," "Wait," and "I'm Looking Through You". This was the longest recording session in The Beatles' career to that date. Go inside the studio

Van Morrison lip-synched to his #10 hit "Brown Eyed Girl" on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. Although the song has become a staple on US oldies radio, it was not a hit in the UK. See the timeless classic

FBI agents in Phoenix, Arizona arrested Jim Morrison for drunk and disorderly conduct aboard a plane. The Doors singer, who was on his way to a Rolling Stones concert with actor Tom Baker, had been drinking heavily and was rude to the flight attendants. The pair spent the night in jail and were released on $2,500 bail. Hear the wild story

Led Zeppelin began their UK tour at City Hall in Newcastle, England. The concert sold out before it was even announced, after thousands of fans turned up at the ticket office early following rumors of the show. The tour took place immediately after the release of their fourth album, Led Zeppelin IV. Experience Zeppelin live
