Sam Cooke tops the charts with his debut single "You Send Me," which stays at #1 for three weeks and establishes him as a soul legend.
1960
Rick Savage, the bassist and co-founder of Def Leppard, is born in Sheffield, England.
1966
David Bowie releases his first single for Deram Records, "Rubber Band," marking an early step in his chameleonic career.
1967
The Monkees hit #1 on the US album chart with Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., their fourth consecutive chart-topping album in just one year.
1967
The Rolling Stones release the psychedelic single "In Another Land," written and sung by bassist Bill Wyman, featuring Steve Marriott on backing vocals.
1968
The Mothers of Invention, led by Frank Zappa, release their doo-wop tribute album Cruising with Ruben & the Jets.
1969
George Harrison joins Delaney & Bonnie on stage in Bristol, England, marking the first time a Beatle had performed live since the band's final concert in 1966.
1971
Led Zeppelin releases the iconic track "Black Dog" as a single in the United States, becoming one of their most recognizable hard rock anthems.
