Today in Classic Rock History
- The Who began their legendary Tuesday night residency at London’s Marquee Club. The band was paid just £50 for each of the 22 consecutive gigs, a run that would cement their reputation as one of the most explosive live acts in rock history.
- The Jimi Hendrix Experience released their second studio album, Axis: Bold as Love, in the UK. The album showcased Hendrix’s expanding musical palette, featuring classics like "Little Wing," "Spanish Castle Magic," and "Castles Made of Sand."
- Janis Joplin performed her final concert with Big Brother and the Holding Company in San Francisco before embarking on her solo career.
- John Lennon and Yoko Ono released "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" in the United States. Backed by the Harlem Community Choir, the protest anthem became an instant holiday standard, pairing a message of peace with Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound production.
- Black Sabbath released their fifth studio album, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Written during a period of intense writer's block for Tony Iommi, the title track saved the band and the album expanded their heavy sound with synthesizers and strings.
- Eric Carmen released his power ballad "All By Myself," which would go on to become a massive solo hit after his time with The Raspberries. The song famously borrowed its melody from Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
- U2 released "Angel of Harlem," the second single from Rattle and Hum. The soulful tribute to Billie Holiday was recorded at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee.
