1958: Rick Nelson started a two-week run at #1 on the Billboard album chart with "Ricky", featuring his hit single "Be-Bop Baby".
1964: Capitol Records released "Meet The Beatles!" in America in both stereo and mono formats. The album entered the Billboard chart at #92 and two weeks later peaked at #1, where it remained for eleven consecutive weeks.
1965: Radio DJ Alan Freed, who coined the term "rock and roll," died at age 43 in Palm Springs, California. His career had been destroyed by the payola scandal, but he was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
1965: The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, Petula Clark, Bobby Vee, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and Bobby Sherman all appeared on ABC-TV's Shindig!
1968: Bob Dylan made his first public appearance since his 1966 motorcycle accident, performing at a Carnegie Hall tribute concert for Woody Guthrie. Also performing were Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, and The Band.
1968: Syd Barrett played his last show with Pink Floyd in Hastings, England.
1968: John Fred & His Playboy Band reached #1 with "Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)", inspired by The Beatles' "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds".
1969: Elvis Presley recorded "In The Ghetto" at American Sound Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. The song became his first Top 10 hit in the United States in four years, peaking at #3.
