Today in Classic Rock History
1962 – The Beach Boys released their debut album Surfin' Safari, marking the beginning of one of rock's most iconic careers. The album peaked at #32 on the US charts and introduced the world to the California surf sound that would define an era. Watch Surfin' Safari
1965 – The Who released "My Generation" in the UK, where it peaked at #2. The explosive anthem became one of rock's most influential songs and a rallying cry for youth rebellion. Watch My Generation
1966 – ? and the Mysterians reached #1 on the Billboard chart with "96 Tears," one of the most distinctive garage rock classics ever recorded. The mysterious Question Mark kept his true identity secret for years. Watch 96 Tears
1967 – The musical Hair opened off-Broadway at New York's Public Theater, introducing the world to songs like "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" and launching the career of songwriter Galt MacDermot. The show would run for 1,750 performances. Watch Aquarius performance
1969 – Creedence Clearwater Revival released Willy and the Poor Boys, featuring the iconic "Fortunate Son" and "Down on the Corner." This was CCR's fourth album and their third release of 1969, cementing their status as one of rock's most prolific bands. Watch Down on the Corner
1970 – Neil Diamond received a gold record for "Cracklin' Rosie," his first #1 hit in the US and his third single to sell over a million copies. Watch Cracklin' Rosie live
1971 – Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in Macon, Georgia, at just 24 years old. The band's At Fillmore East had just gone gold, and Duane was being hailed as one of rock's greatest guitarists. His death came just three hours after the accident. The story of Duane Allman
1973 – The Who's double album Quadrophenia received gold record status, staying on the US charts for forty weeks and Britain's charts for twelve weeks. Watch The Real Me
1973 – John Lennon released his fourth studio album Mind Games on Apple Records. While Rolling Stone called it "his worst writing yet," the LP reached #9 in the US and #13 in the UK, with the title track becoming a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Watch Mind Games
1976 – Elvis Presley held his final studio recording session at Graceland in a mobile studio sent by RCA. The session produced "Way Down," which would become his last single released before his death in August 1977, reaching #18 in the US and #1 in the UK. Listen to Way Down
1985 – Rush released Power Windows, expertly combining their prog-rock sensibilities with new wave flair. The album featured hits "The Big Money," "Grand Designs," and "Marathon." Watch The Big Money
