Today in Classic Rock History
1967: Iggy and the Stooges made their live debut at a Halloween party in Ann Arbor, Michigan—playing experimental noise rock with Iggy using a vacuum cleaner and blender as instruments alongside their amplifiers. It was appropriately chaotic for Halloween. Watch the Stooges
1970: Led Zeppelin's album Led Zeppelin III hit #1 on the Billboard 200, beginning a four-week run at the top. The album featured "Immigrant Song" and marked the band's shift toward incorporating more folk and acoustic elements. Hear Immigrant Song
1975: Queen released "Bohemian Rhapsody" as a single—the six-minute epic that broke all the rules and became one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. It topped the UK charts for nine weeks including Christmas #1. Watch the video
Birthdays:
1961: Larry Mullen Jr., drummer and founding member of U2, was born in Dublin, Ireland. He famously posted a note on his school bulletin board seeking musicians to form a band—that band became U2. See U2 perform
1963: Johnny Marr, legendary guitarist of The Smiths, was born in Manchester, England. His jangly guitar style influenced generations of indie and alternative rock bands. Watch Johnny perform
Have a Rockin Halloween,
