Today in Classic Rock History
​1958 – Soul singer Sam Cooke was involved in a serious car accident near Marion, Arkansas while traveling with Lou Rawls and members of his touring band. The driver, Edward Cunningham, was killed in the crash. Rawls was injured and fell into a coma for several days, while Cooke sustained minor injuries. Despite the tragedy, both Cooke and Rawls recovered and continued their legendary careers. Listen here
1967 – The Moody Blues released their iconic single "Nights in White Satin," which would become one of the defining songs of the psychedelic and progressive rock era. Written and sung by Justin Hayward, the song featured Mike Pinder's haunting Mellotron effects and reached #19 in the UK. When re-released in 1972, it climbed to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the band's signature song. Watch here
1969 – Pink Floyd released their groundbreaking double album Ummagumma in the United States (UK release was November 7). The album featured a live disc with extended performances of songs like "Astronomy Domine" and "Careful with That Axe, Eugene," plus a studio disc showcasing experimental solo compositions by each band member. The album reached #5 in the UK and marked the band's first entry into the US Top 100. Listen here
1973 – Elton John's masterpiece album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road reached #1 on the Billboard 200, beginning an eight-week run at the top of the charts. The double album, recorded at the Château d'Hérouville in France, featured classics like "Candle in the Wind," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." It became John's best-selling studio album and is widely regarded as his greatest work. Watch here
