New Beatles Outtake Released

Today in Classic Rock History

Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps made their national television debut, performing "Dance to the Bop" on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The Kingston Trio reached number one on the charts with their folk song "Tom Dooley," based on a 19th-century North Carolina murder case. The haunting track became the fifth official number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped launch the folk music boom of the late 1950s and 1960s.

The Beatles performed their 50th lunchtime show at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, then played an evening concert at Village Hall in Knotty Ash. These lunchtime performances typically ran from noon to 2pm at the legendary cellar venue on Mathew Street.

The Beach Boys claimed the number one spot on the UK singles chart with "Good Vibrations." Brian Wilson's "pocket symphony" would hold the top position for two weeks, becoming the band's first UK chart-topper.

Monkees singer Davy Jones opened his boutique called Zilch at 217 Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, New York. The shop sold hip clothing and accessories, and allowed customers to design their own clothes.

Elton John recorded a live show at A&R Recording Studios in New York City for radio broadcast on WABC-FM. The performance was later released as the album 11-17-70, capturing Elton and his band with bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson before his rise to superstardom.

Rod Stewart and The Faces released A Nod Is As Good As A Wink... To A Blind Horse, their third album together. The record featured their biggest hit "Stay with Me" and reached number two in the UK and number six in the US.

The Commodores claimed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Still," a gentle ballad written and sung by Lionel Richie. It would be the group's final chart-topping single before Richie departed for his solo career.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono released Double Fantasy, their comeback album after John's five-year hiatus to raise his son Sean. The record would tragically become Lennon's final album released during his lifetime, as he was killed just three weeks later on December 8.
