Today in Classic Rock History
1963: The Beatles released their second album With The Beatles in the UK, featuring "All My Loving," "Please Mr. Postman," and "Roll Over Beethoven." The album spent 51 consecutive weeks on the UK charts and succeeded their debut at #1, giving the Fab Four an unprecedented run at the top.
1965: Bob Dylan married Sara Lownds in New York. The couple would remain together for 12 years before Sara filed for divorce in 1977.
1968: The Beatles released their iconic double album known as The White Album in the UK. The groundbreaking 30-track, 90-minute collection featured classics like "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," "Dear Prudence," "Helter Skelter," "Blackbird," "Back In The USSR," and George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
1968: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, along with Cat Mother and the All Night Newsboys, played at Memorial Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida, delivering one of Hendrix's legendary late-'60s performances.
1968: Pink Floyd performed at the Crawdaddy Club House at Richmond Athletic Club in Richmond, England, supported by Arcadium, during their psychedelic era.
1969: Iron Butterfly, supported by Steel Mill featuring a young Bruce Springsteen, appeared at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, performing in the school's 3,500-seat Crenshaw Gymnasium.
1970: Black Sabbath performed at the legendary Fillmore West in San Francisco during their groundbreaking debut album tour.
1972: The Grateful Dead performed at Municipal Auditorium in Austin, Texas, delivering an epic setlist that included "Promised Land," "China Cat Sunflower," "I Know You Rider," "Truckin'," "The Other One," "Stella Blue," and "One More Saturday Night."
1974: Elton John appeared at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, during his imperial phase as one of rock's biggest superstars.
1975: KC and the Sunshine Band started a two-week run at #1 on the singles chart with "That's The Way (I Like It)," the group's second US chart-topper of 1975.
1976: Neil Young and Crazy Horse performed at the Music Hall in Boston during their powerful mid-'70s partnership.
1977: Rush appeared at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during their progressive rock prime.
1981: Blues legend Muddy Waters was joined onstage by superfans Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones for an unforgettable jam session at Chicago's Checkerboard Lounge.
1994: Pearl Jam released Vitalogy on vinyl, two weeks before its CD release. The album became the first vinyl record to appear on the charts since the dominance of the compact disc format, signaling vinyl's eventual comeback.
1997: Michael Hutchence, the 37-year-old lead singer of INXS, was found dead in his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in Double Bay, Sydney, Australia. The tragic loss shocked the music world.
2002: Surviving members of The Doors, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger, announced they would record and tour again with ex-Cult singer Ian Astbury and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland joining the lineup.
2010: After just one week of availability on iTunes, The Beatles' music sold more than 450,000 albums and 2 million individual songs, proving the Fab Four's enduring appeal in the digital age.
