1955 — Elvis Presley's contract was sold from Sun Records to RCA Victor for $35,000, plus a $5,000 bonus for Elvis himself. This groundbreaking deal, negotiated by Colonel Tom Parker, was the largest amount ever paid for a single performer at the time and launched Elvis into national stardom.
1961 — Bob Dylan began recording his self-titled debut album at Columbia Recording Studios in New York City. The young folk singer recorded tracks including "You're No Good" and "Song To Woody" during two sessions on November 20 and 22.
1967 — The Beach Boys released their album Smiley Smile, a scaled-down version of their ambitious unfinished Smile project. Though initially met with confusion and disappointment, the album featured "Heroes and Villains" and "Good Vibrations" and has since gained respect as a fascinating chapter in the band's history.
1970 — Pink Floyd made their first appearance in Cincinnati, Ohio, performing at the Taft Auditorium during their Meddle U.S. tour.
1970 — George Harrison's triple album All Things Must Pass was released in the United States. His first solo work after The Beatles' breakup, it featured the hit single "My Sweet Lord" and became the first triple album by a single artist.
1971 — Led Zeppelin kicked off their two-night "Electric Magic" shows at London's Wembley Empire Pool. The spectacular five-hour concerts featured circus acts including trapeze artists and performing pigs dressed in police uniforms. The shows sold out in under an hour, with nearly 10,000 tickets gone in minutes.
1971 — Pink Floyd performed at the Taft Auditorium in Cincinnati, Ohio, delivering an epic set featuring "Atom Heart Mother," "Careful With That Axe Eugene," and "Echoes."
1973 — The Who's drummer Keith Moon collapsed twice during a performance at the Cow Palace in San Francisco after someone spiked his drink with horse tranquilizer. A 19-year-old fan named Scot Halpin was pulled from the audience to finish the show on drums for the final three songs, becoming a legend in rock history.
1976 — Paul Simon hosted Saturday Night Live and performed "Here Comes the Sun" and "Homeward Bound" with George Harrison. Harrison became the first former Beatle to appear on SNL. Both Paul McCartney and John Lennon were in New York City watching the show on TV.
1991 — The Rolling Stones signed a record-breaking $45 million contract with Virgin Records, making them rock's highest-paid band once again. The deal covered three albums starting in 1993 and included the rights to their back catalog from 1971 onward.

1941 — Dr. John (Malcolm John Rebennack Jr.), the New Orleans music legend whose blend of blues, jazz, R&B, soul and funk made him one of the most distinctive artists in rock history, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
1946 — Duane Allman, founder and original leader of The Allman Brothers Band, was born in Nashville, Tennessee. The legendary slide guitarist, who died in 1971 at age 24, is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
1947 — Joe Walsh, guitarist extraordinaire known for his work with The James Gang and later The Eagles, was born in Wichita, Kansas. His distinctive guitar style and hits like "Life in the Fast Lane" made him a rock icon.
