1960 Paul McCartney and Pete Best are deported from West Germany after being arrested on suspicion of arson when their hotel room caught fire.
1963 The Beatles release "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in the UK, with advance orders exceeding 700,000 copies. It becomes their second million-seller and later their first American #1.
1967 Bob Dylan completes work on his John Wesley Harding album, recording songs like "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" with Nashville musician Pete Drake on pedal steel guitar.
1968 John Lennon and Yoko Ono release their experimental album Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins, while John Lennon is fined £150 for cannabis possession in London.
1969 The Beatles score their 18th Billboard #1 with the double-sided hit "Come Together"/"Something," which stays on the chart for sixteen weeks.
1969 The Band releases their first top 40 single "Up on Cripple Creek," which peaks at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100.
1971 Pink Floyd releases "One of These Days," the opening track from their Meddle album, while Elton John releases "Levon" from Madman Across the Water.
1975 Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" hits #1 in the UK, where it stays for a record nine weeks, becoming the band's first Top 10 hit in America.
1979 The four original members of Kiss perform what they say will be their last show together, though they would reunite in 1996 for a highly successful reunion tour.
