Today in Classic Rock History
1948 – Ozzy Osbourne, legendary metal vocalist and member of Black Sabbath, is born in Birmingham, England. Over his decades-long career, Ozzy would become one of the most recognizable figures in rock and metal history.
1961 – The Beatles meet Brian Epstein for the first time at his record store in Liverpool, England. This meeting would lead to a management relationship that transformed the band's career and revolutionized popular music.
1965 – The Beatles release their landmark sixth studio album, Rubber Soul, in the United Kingdom. The album, featuring hits like "Norwegian Wood" and "We Can Work It Out," marks a turning point in their evolution from a pop group to serious recording artists. On the same day, The Beatles embark on what would be their final UK tour, performing at Glasgow's Odeon Cinema.
1965 – In Sacramento, California, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is shocked unconscious when his guitar makes contact with his microphone during a performance of "The Last Time" at a concert.
1966 – The Monkees perform their first live concert together in Honolulu, Hawaii.
1968 – Elvis Presley's NBC-TV special, Elvis, airs on television, showcasing the King of Rock and Roll in a powerful comeback performance.
1971 – The Montreux Casino in Switzerland burns to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert. This tragic event inspired Deep Purple's Ian Gillian to write the classic rock anthem "Smoke on the Water."
1973 – Ringo Starr, drummer of The Beatles, releases the single "You're Sixteen," which becomes his second consecutive number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
1979 – A tragic incident occurs at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum when eleven fans of The Who are trampled to death in a rush to gain admittance to the band's concert with unreserved general seating.
