1957 – Sam Cooke's "You Send Me" reached No. 1 on the R&B chart, launching one of soul music's most legendary careers.
1961 – The Everly Brothers enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, interrupting their chart-topping career to serve as artillerymen for the 8th Battalion.
1965 – London's famed department store Harrods closed to the public so The Beatles could do their Christmas shopping in private.
1966 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience made their UK live debut at the Bag O'Nails Club in London. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were in attendance, witnessing the performance that would change rock guitar forever.
1967 – Strawberry Alarm Clock hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Incense and Peppermints," the quintessential psychedelic pop anthem. That same week, The Monkees' "Daydream Believer" rocketed up the charts from No. 33 to No. 5.
1968 – The Beatles released The White Album in the United States. The sprawling 30-song double LP featured classics including "Back in the U.S.S.R.," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and "Blackbird."
1971 – The Doors announced they would continue as a band despite the death of lead singer Jim Morrison earlier that year. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger would share vocal duties on two subsequent albums.
1972 – Lead singer Allan Clarke left The Hollies to pursue a solo career. He would return to the band in 1973.
1974 – Singer-songwriter Nick Drake died at age 26 from an overdose of antidepressants. Though commercially unsuccessful in his lifetime, his three albums have since influenced countless artists including Kate Bush, The Cure, and Bon Iver.
1976 – The Band performed their legendary farewell concert, "The Last Waltz," at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day. The star-studded event featured Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and many others. Martin Scorsese filmed the concert for his acclaimed 1978 documentary.
